“What do you want to do when you grow up?” This is a popular question that adults ask young children. The answers are numerous and unending: a veterinarian, a doctor, a teacher, a firefighter, an astronaut, and a professional athlete. 2
A career choice is important. At this time, most individuals don’t think of their “golden years”. As a senior of 50 years or older, how we spend our later days of retirement is usually one of the last things adults consider until we find ourselves entering that stage of life.
“And even when I am old and my hair is grey, do not turn away from me, God. I need to tell the people still to be born about Your great strength. My descendants need to know about Your power.” Psalm 71:18 (Easy)
God has given us this precious season for a reason. We are to instruct our children and teach younger men and women how to love and serve the Lord and others.
“Growing in grace, they will still thrive and bear fruit and prosper in old age; They will flourish and be vital and fresh, rich in trust and love and contentment.” Psalm 92:14 (AMP)
We know there are many challenges in aging: painful joints, lack of energy, loss of memory, to name a few; however, God is still with us as we age gracefully. The joys are retirement, grandchildren, and the opportunity to volunteer, travel, study a new language, write, and learn to play an instrument. The list is endless.
The bottom line is to enjoy the blessings in this season of life. Often, in my devotions, I ponder the verse, “And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” Matthew 10:30 NIV speaks of our importance and value to God; He reassures me that He also knows how many of my hairs are gray and how many are still brown.
