When God Says, “Wait”.

When God Says, “Wait”.

Technology is both a blessing and a challenge. Microwave ovens became affordable for residential use in the late 1970s, and cell phones became popular in the 1990s and early 2000s. Even as a Baby Boomer, I remember our family enjoying instant mashed potatoes during our evening meal. ATMs and fast-food drive-in restaurants have also been around for many years. In modern times, for quicker service, we have Lyft and Uber, and for grocery delivery options, there are Instacart and Doordash.

“Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in Him, because we trust in His holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in You.” Psalm 33:20-22 (ESV)

What does it mean to wait on the Lord?

To some, that means spending time in prayer, seeking God

When we have a need and ask the Lord for an answer, I’m sure most of us would rather have an immediate response and see how God meets that particular need. God sometimes says, “Yes, no, or wait.” Maybe it’s just me, but I feel the answer to “wait” is more challenging than a “no”. Several questions come to my mind with having to wait: How long? What happens in the meantime? How will I know what is God’s best for me in this crisis?

“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” Psalm 27:14 (ESV)

Over the last five (5) months my husband was in between jobs. He changed jobs; but had a medical emergency that prevented him from going back to complete his training. During this time, there was no sick leave available. He soon started a job as a custodian at a local church, but it was a large building, and also included as part of the job were two (2) school buildings. It was too much of a physical chore for him; especially after the recent medical procedure. Finally, he was able to work as a caregiver. He seemed to enjoy this one as the hours, pay, and duties were a comfortable fit for him. My current concern was that we had fallen behind on some of our bills and now needed a plan to catch up.

Maybe you or someone you know can relate. In today’s economy, everything is so expensive. Just trying to pay normal bills and put food on our family’s table costs so much more than it did ten or twenty years ago. What do we do?

The main truth I’m learning from the Lord while waiting on Him is to live one day at a time. God has ALWAYS met my needs each day. He has never failed me.

Just like the Israelites living in the wilderness for forty (40) years, (out of sin and rebellion), God still provided for them. He gave them food and water; their clothes nor their sandals never wore out.

“He rained down manna for them to eat; He gave them grain from heaven. Man ate the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.” Psalm 78: 24-25

“They asked, and He brought quail and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. He opened a rock, and water gushed out; it flowed like a river in the desert. ” Psalm 105:40-41

“Yet the Lord says, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.” Deuteronomy 29:5 (NIV).

There are several things to do while we “wait on the Lord”.

  • Pray
  • Read Bible devotions
  • Listen to Inspirational music
  • Keep a list of God’s daily blessings

As we pray, remember we are having an intimate conversation with our Lord and Creator. God loves us and wants to bless us.

An amazing Bible devotion I use is YouVersion. 2 It is free when you download your phone app. These devotions have a variety of topics from which to choose.

95. 1 Bright FM 3 is a Christian Contemporary radio station. Their theme is “Make Hope Louder”.

Keep a written list of daily blessings. I started one over a year ago and am glad that it is a daily reminder to give thanks for what God is doing in my life and in the lives of my family and friends.
