“Get Used to Different”

“Get Used to Different”

You may or may not have heard of or seen “The Chosen.” 1 It is an online streaming TV series about the life of Jesus Christ created by Dallas Jenkins. Anyone can download “The Chosen” app from their app store and watch Seasons 1-3 for free. Season 4 will be available within a few weeks and the cast and crew have started filming season 5. Jenkins has stated that he is planning a total of 7 seasons.

Matthew, who would be one of Jesus’ disciples was originally a tax collector.

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.”

Matthew 9:9 (NIV)

In Biblical times, almost everyone hated tax collectors. In “The Chosen”, the writers elaborated on what could have been a response from his followers. This one is from Simon Peter as he reacts to Jesus calling Matthew to be His disciple:

  • Simon: “Whoa, what are you doing? Do you have any idea what this guy has done?
  • Jesus: “Yes.”
  • Simon: “I don’t get it.”
  • Jesus: “You didn’t get it when I chose you, either.”
  • Simon: “But this is different. I’m not a tax collector.”
  • Jesus: “Get used to different.”

Jesus loves creativity and variety. When studying the disciples Jesus chose, most were fishermen. Matthew was a tax collector, and Simon was a Zealot. Jesus also had many women who were His followers: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and Salome.

Throughout Jesus’ ministry, His disciples and followers watched as He healed many people with different diseases and sicknesses; they listened as Jesus taught in the temple, on a hillside, and as they walked from town to town. Their hearts were changed as Jesus told them about God the Father and how they could have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus.

“One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12: 28-30 NIV
